Volvo S80 Review & Road TestReview by www.new-car-reviews.co.uk
Summary The Volvo S80 was launched in 1998 and is an executive class saloon that provides a very credible alternative to the more obvious choices (for example the 5-Series and E-Class). It has won a fair few motoring accolades, most recently in 2002 when it was highly recommended by WhatCar?. The S80 has undergone some subtle revisions in 2003 including; redesigned bumpers, lowering of the boot lid and the addition of some chrome, the cabin has also had a refresh with the centre console being changed from grey to black. Under the skin buyers now have the option of the Four-C active chassis that can be tuned for a sportier performance at the flick of a switch (in effect dampers become stiffer and steering more responsive). In standard form the S80's ride is softer than the competition, which compromises the cars handling on faster and more demanding roads. Bodyroll is well controlled and the car has plenty of grip - although in T6 form the chassis does struggle to put power down cleanly in wet conditions. Steering does not provide the same level of feedback as the best in class. Engine choices include four petrol engines and the excellent D5 turbo-diesel. Apart from the 140bhp 2.4 litre engine, which is a little under powered, all of the engines provide plenty of oomph (the 2.9 litre twin turbo charged six cylinder T6 manages to push this very heavy car from 0-60 in 7.2 seconds). As you would expect the Volvo S80 is a very safe car, front, side and curtain airbags are standard, a WHIPS system reduces whiplash injury in the case of a rear shunt by moving the backrest and headrest in a parallel movement to cushion the head and neck On a practical note the S80 is a hugely spacious car, rear passengers get more than ample head and legroom and the boot is cavernous (with split folding rear seats increasing versatility) - perhaps explaining why Volvo have decided not to create an estate version of the S80. The seats are among the most comfortable you will find in any car. As with other Volvo's the S80 is a very sensible alternative to the competition; an attractive car, well constructed, safe, reliable and from a practical perspective comfortable and more spacious than its rivals. However if you are happy to compromise practicality for a more engaging driving experience the 5-Series and E-Class probably have the edge (at a not insignificant price premium).
