Volvo S60 Review & Road TestReview by www.new-car-reviews.co.uk
Summary In a dramatic departure from its traditional bland forms, Volvo has created a striking and memorable design that is a real head turner. The S60 is a highly desirable alternative to more mainstream executive saloons, namely the the BMW 3 Series, C-Class Mercs and Audi A4's. Having delivered in terms of looks Volvo have also enhanced its cars dynamic qualities and buyers can opt for two suspension settings - designed for either comfort or sportier handling. In either setting the S60's wide stance means that the car feels secure in fast tight corners (although the front wheel drive system is never going to give the same levels of driving experience as the rear wheel drive 3 Series). On the down side the steering provides only limited feedback and this is particularly disappointing in the otherwise outstanding S60R. The base model comes with a 2.0 litre turbo-charged unit that manages 140 mph and 0-60 in 8.8 seconds. At the top of the range the T5 is equipped with a 2.3 litre turbocharged unit that manages 155 mph and 0-60 in 6.8 seconds. In addition a 2.4 litre LPG and petrol unit is also available across the model range. On a practical note, the S60 is an enormously spacious car thanks to the wide body, head and legroom are also excellent front and rear. The boot is also generously proportioned and split folding rear seats add to its versatility. The cabin is finished in high quality materials and is solidly constructed, controls are easy to find and operate. As you would expect the S60 scored well in its NCAP crash tests (four stars) and achieved an overall rating of 82% for overall crash safety - aided by standard front and side airbags. At higher speeds the cabin remains hushed , wind and road noise (although sportier set-ups do raise road noise levels) being very well damped and only the diesel engine disturbing the peace when pushed hard.
