Renault Megane Review & Road TestReview by www.new-car-reviews.co.uk
Drivers There are five engines to choose from, 1.4L through 2.0L topping out at 136bhp. The new Renault Megane is great to drive, responsive on windy roads and well able to cruise motorway speeds with nothing but a murmur. The diesel engines are well refined and sound proofed, although reports suggest a little weak. Power steering, plus a 2-way adjustable steering column is standard across all models, as are anti-lock breaks. The Megane self-centres well, giving you cause to keep a firm grip on the wheel. All round visibility is superb and inside, the trim is excellent with great ergonomics, dials and instruments to boot.
Passengers The new Renault Megane offers a very comfortable ride through the side streets and on the long motorway straight with firm, hugging seats. The car feels solid, though the suspension can be a little overcompensating hitting potholes and divots. Rear passenger space can be tight in smaller three versions but in the larger scenic models you'll find no cause for concern.
Practicality The Renault Megane Great value for money and very economical with low emissions. The sporty version hatchbacks and light to drive and well equipped, with the Scenic version offering an unbelievable amount of storage space and cubbyholes. Excellent rear seat adjustment features on the Scenic, which are also removable and collapsible. Rear boot access is strangely narrow considering its generous boot space.
Equipment With air-conditioning, a CD player standard across all but the basic models in the range the new Megane boasts excellent equipment levels. Higher spec models have CSV (understeer control) and a tyre-pressure monitor as options. Though the new 'flight deck' style hand brake does require some getting used to.
Safety & Security (previous model)
The Renault Megane II achieved 5/5 stars from Euro NCAP front and side impact tests and 2/4 stars for pedestrian rating. Basic models come with front and lateral, driver and passenger airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD (electronic brake-force distribution) and Brake Assist as standard, plus deadlocking for the doors.
Quality & Reliability The Megane II boasts high quality inside and out, better than the VW Golf in our opinion! Excellent material trim and soft touch surfaces. Renault is also climbing the reliability tables in recent surveys.
Owning Uniquely styled, improved dynamics and very desirable, the Megane mark II will certainly turn heads around town as the public get used to its unique and aggressive look. Replacement parts for minor bumps and scrapes are affordable, which in turn lowers insurance premiums. The new Megane II has the standard 3 year/60,000 mile warranty and it's resale values are good at this stage in its production.
