MG ZT Review & Road Test

Review by www.new-car-reviews.co.uk

MG ZT

Summary

At the top of the MG range the MG ZT most ably manifests the companies desire to create prestige performance cars. As with the other cars in the range the ZT is a reworked Rover, in this case the 75, and is fitted with a sports bodykit, boot lid spoiler and the trademark aggressive mesh grille. In common with other models the new look ZT is not for the shy and retiring.

The MG ZT's most significant achievement is in its ability to blend an excellent sporting ride whilst retaining an executive class ride when the going gets rough. On fast, twisty roads the MG ZT maintains superb body control, and the wide tyres combined with the revised aerodynamics provide plenty of grip. The resulting effect is a car that is difficult to ruffle and gives drivers lots of confidence to push this large car to its limits.

At the top of the MG ZT range, the 2.5 litre V6 190 bhp has a top speed of 141mph and delivers a steady and smooth stream of power. However, in contrast with the ZS the MG ZT seems to have retained its sound proofing so the thrilling note of the engine is only audible when pushed very hard.

In terms of build quality the MG ZT is everything you would expect of a car based on the Rover 75, the cabin is finished with high quality materials and is very solidly constructed, controls are also well laid out and easy to use. Practically, the car can accommodate five adults, although rear legroom is a little restricted. Bootspace is quite generous and there is plenty of oddments storage dotted around the cabin.

Overall, the MG ZT is up with the best in class, namely the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes C-Class, and pound for pound represents very good value for money. However the 'in your face' styling will probably be too much for some.

NCAP safety and security test
NCAP crash test result - 4/5 (Rover 75 result)
NCAP pedestrian test rating - 2/5 (Rover 75 result)
