MG ZS Review & Road TestReview by www.new-car-reviews.co.uk
Summary The MG ZS is a heavily reworked version of the Rover 45 and is available in hatchback or saloon form. As with the MG ZR the ZS carries its sporting pretensions on its sleeve. Sports bodykit, boot lid spoiler, aggressive mesh grille and an in your face choice of colours mean that this is not a car for shrinking violets. With looks like these the ZS needs to deliver real sporting performance and thanks to Rover's engineers it delivers the goods. The ZS now has a double wishbone suspension at the front and multi-link system at the rear (same set up as a Formula one car), the ride height has also been lowered, steering is now sharper and provides lots of feedback. Consequently the wallowy 45 has been transformed into a real drivers car of which Rover should be justly proud. Engine choices include two petrol units at 1.8 litres (115bhp) and a 2.5 litre V6 (180bhp) and two turbo diesels. The star performer is the 180 bhp unit that delivers 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 139 mph. Equally importantly, when revved hard it delivers an engine note that wouldn't be out of place in an Alfa Romeo. Although the interior of the ZS has been spruced up, colour splashes, metallic effect panels, it still looks dated and steering wheel adjustment is limited. Controls also look dated but are logically placed and simple to use. Practically, the car can accommodate four adults in reasonable comfort although rear passenger legroom isnt brilliant. Both the hatch and the saloon have good boot space and folding rear seats. As with the MG ZR the ZS is not a quiet car to take on longer journeys, wider tyres and tuned engines resulting in significant road and engine noise at motorway speeds.
