Ford Focus C Max Review & Road Test

Review by www.new-car-reviews.co.uk

Ford Focus C Max

Summary

The all new Focus C-Max marks Ford's belatedly entry into the compact MPV market and the newcomer definitely turns up the heat in an already competitive class. The new car is based on the new Focus hatchback chassis (2004 model).

Essentially this class of car attempts to combine the practicality of an MPV with the handling of a family saloon. In terms of practicality the new Ford Focus C-Max does not have the 7 seat passenger capacity of the Vauxhall Zafira or Peugeot 307 SW but it accommodates 5 with plenty of head and legroom. Additional space can be created by folding away the central seat of the rear seats and sliding the rear seats backwards, creating a very spacious four seater - a very useful innovation. As with other cars in this class the rear seats can also be removed to create a huge load carrying capacity.

The interior of the new Focus C-Max uses high quality materials and feels very solid - so should live up to the trials and tribulations of family use. Drivers seating is comfortable and steering is adjustable for reach and rake, controls are all well laid out and simple to use..

However, it is in the new cars ride and handling that it outshines the competition, thanks to the all new Focus chassis. The steering is precise and provides much more feedback than any of the competition, body roll is also much more controlled. Over uneven road surfaces the Focus C-Max feels very sure footed and absorbs bumps very well.

The C-Max is available with four engine options, two petrol at 1.6 and 1.8 litres and two turbo-diesels at 1.6 and 2.0 litres. The diesels are available with Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT). The 2.0 TDCi manages a respectable top speed of 125 mph and gets from 0-62 mph in 9.6 seconds.

The new Focus C-Max is a very refined car around town and at higher motorway speeds where wind and road noise are all very well damped. The diesel engines are also very quiet once they have warmed up with only the 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol units creating intrusive levels of noise when pushed and at higher speeds.

NCAP safety and security test
NCAP crash test result - 4/5
NCAP pedestrian test rating - 2/5
NCAP child protection rating - 4/5
