Fiat Punto Review & Road TestReview by www.new-car-reviews.co.uk
Drivers Good all round visibility and an adjustable seat height provide a good driving position. Gearbox and controls are easy to use and well set out. As might be expected for an Italian design, the Punto offers a sporty ride with excellent cornering ability and a hard suspension for good feel. Those in need of serious performance should look at the 1.8 HGT 16V model, which churns out 130 bhp. The diesels although noisy offer good performance too.
Passengers The Punto has a very roomy cabin for a small car and 5 person journeys are relatively comfortable. However some passengers may complain about the hardness of the ride over bumpier roads and the tight suspension also produces noticeable road noise.
Practicality Storage space has been well thought out for the cabin and the Punto comes with a very spacious boot and split rear seats on most models.
Equipment All Puntos come with power steering and the useful Dualdrive system, which allows the steering to be lightened for parking and low speed city driving. The trim looks substantial and the dashboard and controls are smart. Aircon is available on the higher specification models and the top of the range stereo system and CD player is a recommended extra.
Safety & Security The Fiat Punto is a safe and solid vehicle, recording the best NCAP result amongst its peer group. Driver and passenger airbags are fitted to all models, side and roof airbags come as extras. ABS is also fitted to all but the most basic models.
Quality & Reliability There has been a noticeable improvement in the quality of the Punto which now comes with a 3 year mechanical warranty. The overall feel of the car is certainly more solid than its predecessor.
Owning The Punto is an economical car to own with low servicing and insurance costs and excellent mileage with most models exceeding 40 mpg. The stylish Punto is also a car that does not suffer from worrying depreciation levels
